Burnaby, BC - February 15, 2002 - Merlin Software Technologies International, Inc. (OTCBB: MLSW), a leading developer
of network attached storage (NAS) appliances and the Merlin SecurDVRTM today announced that
it has released Version 2.2 of its EssentialServerTM software. The new features and usability
enhancements provide improved scalability, security and data backup protection. It also includes native Apple Macintosh
client-side data backup support, which is the first in the NAS industry.
"Version 2.2 enhancements and new features were completely market driven," says Anmar Oueja, Engineering Manager
at Merlin. "We listen to our customers and continually work to meet their requirements for increased security, usability
and data protection. This release also demonstrates our commitment to the Macintosh community by providing them with the first
fully-featured NAS and backup solution. Now all the functionality that we provide Windows users is available to the Macintosh
community. This support opens the door to selling the EssentialServer into Macintosh intensive environments such as the graphics,
engineering and desktop publishing industries."
The significant new features and enhancements include:
- Support for SCSI RAID 0,1,5 and IDE RAID 0,1,5: This feature provides users with a higher level of data protection
and also enables the EssentialServer to substantially increase storage capacities by incorporating more disk drives.
- Windows NT Primary Domain Controller (PDC) integration: Tight integration with the Windows NT PDC improves user
access security and simplifies installation as each user on the PDC can be automatically included on the EssentialServer,
with their predefined user permissions and quotas.
- Client side support for Apple Macintosh users: This feature is a NAS industry first and allows Macintosh users to run
the EssentialServer's PerfectCopyTM client side software on their computer and automatically backup their local files to
the EssentialServer. The software can be set to automatically copy any changed file at user configurable intervals and means
that Macintosh users never need to worry about losing data in case of a disk failure or by accidentally deleting a file.
- A number of usability enhancements including guest access for global folders, faster rendering of administration tool,
and improved reporting features for administrators.
This software upgrade is free of charge to registered EssentialServer users.
